Black sand is new sand that comes from the break-up of volcanic rocks. So, black sand beaches are the newer beaches on the island. Over time (hundreds of years) they will be converted to white sand beaches. Here's a Hawaiian welcome to the beach.
There's no doubt that the sand is black.
The surf was a bit rough while we were there. We enjoyed watching waves splashing on the rocks.
Dan Shuck told us about the small church on a hill behind the beach. The church has a great view of the area. So, we climbed up the hill to the Hoku Loa Congregational - Henry Opukahaia Chapel. Here are some pictures of the church and the view.

We next drove by Dan and Willie Shuck's house which was on the opposite side of Hwy 11. Since Dan and Willie had lived on Hawaii, they were a great help as we planned our trip. They still own a house on the island. It's a beautiful home in a peaceful area.
From here we headed on to the Punalu'u Bakery - the southernmost bakery in the USA and known for their sweet bread. Can't wait!
